Tear down the Wall

I have spent my whole political life fighting to open up politics. So let me make one thing very clear: this government is going to be unlike any other.

This government is going to transform our politics so the state has far less control over you, and you have far more control over the state.

This government is going to break up concentrations of power and hand power back to people, because that is how we build a society that is fair.

This government is going to persuade you to put your faith in politics once again.

I'm not talking about a few new rules for MPs; not the odd gesture or gimmick to make you feel a bit more involved.

I'm talking about the most significant programme of empowerment by a British government since the great enfranchisement of the 19th Century.

The biggest shake up of our democracy since 1832, when the Great Reform Act redrew the boundaries of British democracy, for the first time extending the franchise beyond the landed classes.

Landmark legislation, from politicians who refused to sit back and do nothing while huge swathes of the population remained helpless against vested interests.

Who stood up for the freedom of the many, not the privilege of the few.

A spirit this government will draw on as we deliver our programme for political reform: a power revolution.

A fundamental resettlement of the relationship between state and citizen that puts you in charge.

So, no, incremental change will not do.

It is time for a wholesale, big bang approach to political reform.

That's what this government will deliver.

It is outrageous that decent, law-abiding people are regularly treated as if they have something to hide.

It has to stop.

So there will be no ID card scheme.

No national identity register, no second generation biometric passports.

We won't hold your internet and email records when there is just no reason to do so.

CCTV will be properly regulated, as will the DNA database, with restrictions on the storage of innocent people's DNA.

And we will end practices that risk making Britain a place where our children grow up so used to their liberty being infringed that they accept it without question.

There will be no ContactPoint children's database.

Schools will not take children's fingerprints without even asking their parent's consent."

This will be a government that is proud when British citizens stand up against illegitimate advances of the state.

That values debate, that is unafraid of dissent.

That's why we'll remove limits on the rights to peaceful protest.

It's why we'll review libel laws so that we can better protect freedom of speech.

And as we tear through the statute book, we'll do something no government ever has:

We will ask you which laws you think should go.

Because thousands of criminal offences were created under the previous government...

Taking people's freedom away didn't make our streets safe.

Obsessive lawmaking simply makes criminals out of ordinary people.

So, we'll get rid of the unnecessary laws, and once they're gone, they won't come back.

We will introduce a mechanism to block pointless new criminal offences.

Nick Clegg 19th May 2010

I hereby declare 19th May a public holiday

So have they put this in front of their masters in Brussels who are responsible for a lot of those laws? And if they have why haven't we heard them telling the EU to fuck the hell off?

Word verification mythea which just about sums up my opinion on Clegg's pile of steaming cunticulation. Ain't he the one trying to resist the repealing of the massively abused Human Rights bill? You know, the one blocking the just conviction of criminals and the absolute necessity of repatriating Jihadists to a law system geared for dealing with terrorist filth?

So, we have the two main political parties for decades playing British people against each other on the basis of economic self-interest. But that`s not as effective once they both merge into being neo-liberal economic and globalising parties.

So, they come up with a new good cop/bad cop routine. Your freedom, privacy and dignity in your own country becomes the hook to keep people hypnotised while they move ahead with trying to save their EU and global governance projects.

Sounds fucking superb! So why do I get the impression it'll end in a damp squib of drab legislation.

If we ask for a law to be changed that they don't personally want changed, it will stay. I'd be surprised if they are true to thrie word and ignore their own preferences in favour of ours.

Personally I'd like to see RIPA, Digital Economy Act, smoking ban, hunting ban, all offences to do with climate change, repealed! No, ain't going to happen.

If they did it could even make the fuckers popular again!

Very good. Let's see if the thing about fine words, butter and parsnips holds.

Here's a test. There is a proposed 11.3 million record database to be built which will record everyone who wants to work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults. A registration on it will cost £67 and it could cost millions to put people on this list.

A far cheaper and smaller list would be "those people found not to be suitable after proper investigation". All you would have to do is check that a name is NOT on that list, apply your skill and judgment as to whether you've got someone you trust as a volunteer/employee, and work on the fair assumption that most people are not sex offenders, thieves, murderers or complete incompetents. You could take reasonable care and not rely on a tick-box exercise.

When I see the Independent Safeguarding Agency canned for being neither independent nor any good at safeguarding, then I'll be impressed.

In case anybody is worried that ths giant bureaucracy is really necessary, you should know that it was enthusiastically set up by Ed Balls and he already had to water it down once when it became obvious that nobody would be allowed to make even a celebrity visit to a school without paying a fee first.

Admirable but surely that mechanism already exists - Parliament! Address why it hasn't done its job first matey. Abuse of the whips is one. The abuse of secondary legislation is another.

What must be borne in mind is that no Parliament can actually bind future Parliaments. Any law the coalition makes could be unmade by the Government after just as the Coalition could unmake the laws Labour made. 'Convention' dictates that this rarely happens.

This has the chance to do a great deal of good but we must be wary that existing liberties are not traded for those already lost.

Nope.

'Fraid not.
Slashing MPs' and councillors' pay to a mere living wage?
You must be joking.

So what is Mr Clegg promising us?
An undemocratic form of PR.

Sure, the other reforms are good and libertarian ones, especially the reviews of libel and protest laws. But they don't go nearly far enough - and anything they achieve will be easily destroyed by the next illiberal government.

Give us a truly representative democracy without the antediluvian practice of Whipping, a House of Commons who actually know what it's like to be a commoner, the restoration of our sovereignty which currently resides in the hands of the EU...

Or the recent protests in Parliament Square will be a mere pittance compared to the venting of disillusionment that will spring forth from every Englishman that dare defend his liberty in the face of a political system that operates, as Jefferson would have put it, without the consent of the governed.

P.S. when I say 'Englishman' it's rhetoric; I don't mean to exclude women or (ethnic) foreigners - I define 'Englishness' as sharing a set of values about freedom, common law, and democracy.

Now does that include the duel passport holding, country hopping, easy come/easy go johnny come lately, freedom of speech destroying, community splitting, money syphoning, sharia law demanding, ethnic grouping, wife importing, translator demanding mass, or just the integrated ones that see themselfs as 100% English - how many would that be then?

Surly that is racist to use such definitions, surely by PC Liberal definition anyone who sits their non English speaking arse in the council waiting list room demanding housing ahead of those who have paid in all their lives is now English!

Simple answer: no. I'm fairly sure they don't share the set of values to which I refer.
The lefty PC nutters would probably consider my definition racist. I don't bloody well care what they think. What is racist is supposing that ethnicity defines identity; my whole point with that remark was that it doesn't.

Now, please explain why you call me "fascist", because that's a rather strong thing to say and I'd like to hear how you justify it. If you're just using it as a generic term of abuse, then you're an idiot. Same goes for comparing me to Nazis.

Frankly, the only reason I added my post scriptum was because if I hadn't, someone at least as trollsome as yourself would have jumped on the word "Englishman", called me a Little Englander, probably also a racist and a chauvinist - and, quite possibly, compared me to the Nazis. With trolls like you, rational discourse never stood a chance.

Unfortunately, the amount of time I have free to spend on it, or on arguing with yourself, is considerably curtailed by the fact that I am currently in the course of one of the most challenging undergraduate degree courses in the world.

I sincerely hope that this is reason enough for not having the most heavily trafficked website on the 'net. I realise that those people who have no life outside of the internet may well consider page-views a measure of the value of a person's life.

As for the charge of 'brainwashing', I suspect you haven't really read any of what I have written - at least, not as sentences; you have instead seen individual words and jumped on them, rather in the manner of a poorly-coded AI chatbot.

Can't you see that I'm condemning multiculturalism? That I want to tell immigrants "Integrate or leave"?

Just because I'm an intellectual doesn't automatically make me effete - nor does it make me a Lib Dem.

Most "racial" violence is actually religious; certainly the spectre of Sharia Law is a product of Islam; the Irish "troubles" (now there's a euphemism) were a straight war between Protestants and Catholics.
I hate religion with a passion, I want to ban indoctrination, that religions might wither and die within two generations, and that people might at last be freed to think for themselves.

And again this anonymous fellow seems to think I'm a multiculturalist. I think, by this point and given my clear statements to the contrary, it is entirely reasonable to dismiss them as a troll, or possibly a case for the mental health profession.
Further evidence, were it needed, can be found in their continued refusal to say anything of what they do with their life - a reasonable guess, therefore, would be that they in fact live on benefits, being too idle and shiftless to do anything that sounds like work.
Then there are the attempts at slurs on my character and upbringing, presumably based on the supposition that I am some kind of southern metropolitan bastard; in fact I'm from a village in the 'norf' that had its railway station closed by Beeching, near a shabby and decrepit market town with a chav population exceeded only by that of Boston a few tens of miles to the east. My current presence as an undergraduate is due, not to some kind of ancestral privilege, but to hard work and keen intellect, both apparently concepts alien to my current interlocutor.

I should also like to point out that university is not, as popularly depicted, a bunch of upper-class twits on a three-year-long piss-up. It may, in the past, have been that way (when it was endowed by the church for the express purpose of producing clergy), but nowadays it is a place of learning, and bloody hard work too. So can we please have less of the class-war "everyone at university deserves to be mocked" anti-intellectualist hatred?

None of this is going to happen. Tory scum will sink it below the water line. Or dilute it to the point of irrelevance. Get a grip, people. This is Britain, not America.

Sound and Fury:
You want to come to Louth.
Although saying that you probably have, being from so nearby.
It seems like every bloke under the age of 50 thinks he's 'Jack the fucking Biscuit' in this town.
Being a cockney wanker myself, I can't understand why people want to turn a little piece of heaven into hell.
Some places I lived and saw in London were indeed hell.
The cunts here should move there if they think they are missing out on all the action.
Maybe having some big triple bangin Nigga shank em up de ass will sort there minds out.

Note:
out of courtesy I say to 'I am Stan' that no offence is intended because I think he is worthy of an explanation.
To every other PC cunt I say bollocks to qualifying what I wrote.
A PC cunt is not worthy and wouldn't listen anyway.
S&F just make your point and stick with it,you have no need to qualify a statement.
Especially here(The site of the free) for fucks sake.

I think all we will get is less obvious survelliance , still be same PR mind bend as new accepted mode of speaking properly .

I rather have the feeling that Dave my have made a fatal error in his rush for the new politics and neutering the old politics , He will either have to re write history or acknowledge that many people do vote for right wingers .

Whilst the attempt to herd them into a weak position , had a sort of inevitability about it , he could find his own style becoming a stranger to the party core public understandings, mind you Nick clegg is not doing so good with his devout .

Both right and left and can work together under a a time when the country needs unity , but this may come across as changing minds without substance . If the right argument has now become "offensive" , or even the out of euro land group , he will send a message which he will look stupid if he trys to take it back .

Whilst losing the right may still keep the coalition going , in what is described as popular government and sour a number of minds to his parlimentary party reform , as being the attitude of labour .
An argument you dont want is of course an effective managerial tool , but finding you have a party you dont want is foolish .

Nick Clegg "new politics" fan dance , seduced the starving quite well , however dear little Chamis question showed , how policy is not the same as aspiration enthusing . Ed Balls on R4 this tea time was almost pitifull ,"what policy differences did you have Gordon Brown ?"
Ans : "none really we got on quite well most of the time"

way to go ed , disseminated it well , framed intelligently those tough policy questions and distanced your self from the ruin , didnt throw in any hum drum I prefer sharmin to andrex , full 10 . Burnham to throw hat in , I bet Harriet goes for it , she has the look of someone whose waited for full moon on halloween .

Whilst low corporation and simplified tax is welcome (together with closing loopholes) CW would have been tempted to ask for all profits to be used to pay off the debt for the next two years , soon get there money back when its healthy.

But now talk is of prolonged limited growth in eurozone , and countries could re adopt own curencies again , so brussels will have to be cut them !. most countries could certainly do without increased EU payments and Jaque delores in tears , well I would have drink on it .

Jack the Biscuit? That's a new one to me so I'll come across it everywhere now.

Louth looks nice. I see it is home to clenched-fist-raising singer Robert Wyatt, who like Chumbawumba & Billy Bragg in their own way, prefers to preach Utopia somewhere where his ideals are less obviously hollow and lucrative.

My own dorm is a pretty little market town on the edge of the Peak District, chock full of right-on White tossers, barely acknowledging the ever-growing increasingly-alien hordes in Mcr, Sheffield & Derby just outside the untested-walls.

Too many people getting wet over this. With one hand he gives us with the other hand he takes away.

There is no way that these clowns are going to put power making decisions back in the hands of the public.

Reimer,be afraid be very afraid,

"No one would have believed, in the early years of the 21st century, that human affairs in a pretty little market town were being watched from the timeless world of Nottingham.

No one could have dreamed that they were being scrutinized as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

Few men even considered the possibility of life on the other side of the un-tested walls. And yet, across the gulf of fields, minds immeasurably superior to theirs regarded their little market town with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against them."

War of the shires.
