FFS- Labour A Libertarian Party !!!!!

But time after time, the Lib Dems have been right about civil liberties and Labour has been wrong. Making Labour a genuine libertarian party again would do more than cement the partnership, it would remove what has been a blot on Labour's record.

Roy mustn't have received the memo about how all "Libertarians" are evil ultra-right-wing capitalist Nazis with an Ayn Rand fetish and a desperate desire to kill all poor people.

I have never been able to work out exactly what the British Left thinks that word means.

The Mad Hattersley is simply writing nonsense.

To be expected.

It's a compliment. Libertarians may not poll many votes but the idea has legs and is taking hold. That is why the major players are trying to co-opt and define it in their authoritaran terms.

Labour are about as Libertarian as the Chinese are revolutionary democrats.

He's confusing liberty with Lenin!

Not that hard really seeing as the Il-Liberal non-democrats have more in common with Lenin than Libertarianism.

I don't recall the Il-Liberals calling for out of the undemocratic big state EU?

C*nts

Off subject Old Holborn, but you may be interested in checking out the group 'British Alliance' who are 'Marching on Parliment' 22nd May.
Do we know who's behind them?

The LibDems could afford to be right about all sorts of issues what with being the Parliamentry cat.
A cat with no responsibilty, eats the grub, enjoys the comforts of home and demands attention every now and then.
If they had a sniff of power those cunts would have voted WAR.
If the LibDems had principles they would have joined the Cons straight away for the national interest but they didn't.
What is best for the LibDems takes priority.
I am glad they did not automaticaly form a coalition with the Torys.
let Cameron and his inner circle sweat and be punished later.
Let Clegg join the Labour scum and fucking die.

It must be the incontinence medication taking hold... he's probably necking the enemas, because a people's committee told him that his arsehole must have equality with his cakehole.

Labour are Libertarians only in that they take Liberties (or rather gobble them like vegetarians do with veg, but then Roy would consider a salad to be a bourgeouise plot).

Next announcement, Dianne Abbott announces that Labour are the Rastafarians.

The peace loving principled LibDems made as a condition of a coalition what?
Getting our troops out of Afghanistan?
No PR is what they demand.
Who would have thunk that.
Power over principle wins every time in Westminster.
All the LibLabCon clone leaders would go much further to lick each others arse if it weren't for the pesky party members.
For fucks sake Clegg choose Labour, because Cameron won't tell you to fuck off like he should....the Cunt.

Roy Hattersly said of Enoch Powell after the 'Rivers of blood' speech.
"I hate him for it"
Hate him Roy,why, because he broke ranks and the public were told the fucking truth for once?
We know what reward Powell got for telling the truth.
Banishment.

@Guthrum (the OP)

Hattersley is an odious little man, and the Labour Party has never been libertarian in any sense that I'm aware of.

However.

'Libertarian' and 'socialism' are _not_ mutually exclusive terms: socialism doesn't have to mean a centralised and state controlled system. That might be how those in power view socialism (pretty obvious really; by seeking power they have already gone down that road...), but from an historical as well as ideological viewpoint that isn't necessarily the case.

I'll quote from Wikipedia:
The first person to describe himself as a libertarian was Joseph Déjacque, an early French anarchist communist. The word stems from the French word libertaire, and was used to evade the French ban on anarchist publications. In the context of the European socialist movement, libertarian has conventionally been used to describe those who opposed state socialism, such as Mikhail Bakunin. In the United States, the movement most commonly called libertarianism follows a capitalist philosophy; the term libertarian socialism therefore strikes many Americans as a contradiction in terms. However, the association of socialism with libertarianism predates that of capitalism, and many anti-authoritarians still decry what they see as a mistaken association of capitalism with libertarianism in the United States.

Ah, but the parliamentarians are Libertarians. No Big Brother breathing down their necks: very few of the 10,000 laws that the peasants endure are applied to those in power. They live a Libertarian life: it's just they don't want that for the Plebs.

The difference is.....

If people want to go and live on a voluntary basis in a socialist collective that is fine and dandy by a Libertarian.

The major problem comes when a Socialist insists that a Libertarian lives in that collective, and uses the threat of the State with its monopoly on violence to enforce compliance

Why do you think they flushed half the old faithfulls who remember when the tories were tories and labour were labour with a certain party ideology through the expenses scandal(they were told they could have what they liked by their party advisors! and it was all cleared by the politics machine!) and why did some of the more higher up `progressives` get away scott free!

One thing you must remember in politics, if its big, it was planned!

The state controls 50% of the economy and that is libertarian.

The only "freedom" the Labour party believes in is their freedom to spend other people's money, oh and put your children and grandchildren in debt to pay for their slobbering underclass of dependent voters, and the finger pointing nannys who "care" so much about poverty they only want to make everyone else pay for it.

Meanwhile, everyone is excited about what gang of thieves seeks to pillage our pockets and tell us what to do.

Socialism by its very nature always ultimately demands submission to the the collective.

Libertarian Socialism = Hippy Commune, e.g.: Christiania in Denmark.

In this scenario, the group is the "hippy commune", and dissent from those group values leads to exile; yet, dissent is inevitable...

Alas, due to the inconvenience of human nature, and the psyhcotropic effects of chronic narcotic consumption, capitalism inevitably seeps in; and then once the pecking order is established by virtue of biodiversity rendering some people just better at "taking advantage/bettering themselves" (delete according to wage bracket), socialism seeps in to yoke the "self-serving/entrepreneurial" (again, delete according to wage bracket) beats to drag the plough to feed the village idiots.

Neither system is sustainable as the fundamental driving forces of living organisms are ignored as an inconvenience to these Eutopian hallucinations.

Roy Hattersley is well known for being a pompous, dishonest unprincipled trimmer.

This just confirms it.
