Legal Aid for the Unemployed

JIM DEVINE today defended his decision to claim legal aid to fight criminal charges over fiddling his expenses – because he is out of work.
The 57-year-old, barred by Labour from standing for re-election as Livingston MP because of his expenses claims, said he was entitled to help from the state in his upcoming criminal trial because he is now unemployed.

Tell me he didn't really say that.

I've been out of work now since 1953.

I'm a coronation mug painter by trade.

He wasn't out of work when he fiddled his expenses.

He's only out of work now 'cos he fiddled them.

In an oblique way, did he just incriminate himself, i.e. cause and effect?

If these three are indeed "unemployed" .. I fail to see how they can possibly qualify for Legal Aid .. in so far as their own actions effectively made them "unemployed"

In the same way that one can't claim the Dole, if one has resigned or taken voluntary redundancy ..

The whole thing is just a complete travesty & most certainly wouldn't apply to the ordinary citizenry ..
