the Straw Man speaketh

"The Duke of Wellington put up a lot of objections to democracy on the grounds that you get the wrong people elected," he said, "the great unwashed, and sometimes this is true." - Jack Straw

Give us our democracy back, Jack. It doesn't belong to you, it belongs to each and every one of us.

I wish Straw would stop talking about himself, the conceited bastard!

England is not and never has been a pure democracy, nor even a representative democracy. England is a parliamentary democracy in which total and unrestrained sovereignty rests with parliament. There is, in the most literal sense, no act which parliament can undertake which would be unconstitutional or illegal, provided the proper procedures are followed.

When you fuckers wank about democracy this and democracy that, it always makes constitutional lawyers chuckle. Why? Because you're rejecting your own English heritage which laying claim to the Scottish tradition model of popular sovereignty. Even your shite about the common law, OH, owes a lot more to Renaissance Scottish thinkers like George Buchanan (he of contractual governance) than with any notions that are native to England.

When you strip away the bullshit, it's by turns horrendous and hilarious how much the Little Englanders rely on Scottish constitutional conventions. Your ideal vision of a democratic England is pretty much a picture of Scotland circa 1700 - and you're all too ignorant and stupid to realise it! Comedy gold!

We certainly do end up with the wrong people being elected Jack. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Well, that cunt Straw should know what he's talking about as he's one of the finest examples of 'the wrong people getting elected'.
