This little book has had some good reviews in the press and on the radio.

The people of East Germany went from a Nazi repression 1933-45 straight through to the Communist repression of 1945-89. Yet Millar gives us a close up of how the ordinary citizen lived and coped, whilst living in East Berlin then capital of the GDR. Proving that the State and all who serve it are little shits out for themselves.

Plus ca change !

As a member of Reuters he was under constant surveillance, and he has read his Stasi report. The Stasi Colonel reviewing the file noted disapprovingly, that Millar allow his wife to carry all the heavy shopping to the car. Something his wife has never allowed him to forget.

Yet despite 66 years of state repression, the spirit of the average Helmut in the street was never broken. Despite all the files and surveillance the Stasi missed the revolutionary tide, and so did the Western Intelligence Agencies !

One day they all just said "no more", and the nightmare was over.

A great read, done with lightness and humour covering one of the best periods in my life.

Ah, the 80's.

A blissful time. Good music, cheap drink, and willing wifies....

I was on point in West Germany for most of the 80's. Keeping an eye on Ivan. I was attached to the RAF and my life expectancy was 26 minutes if Ivan lobbed a nuke or two our way. My mates nearer the East German border had around 6 minutes to fill their pants.

Heady days, but my wee brain is jammed with good memories of that decade.

We'll never see their like again.

These days I mostly wonder just what the fuck I was defending.

Those twats in Westmonster hit the self-destruct button in 1997.

November 5th.

646 of them. 61,000,000 of us.

End it. We've had enough.

With all due respect, i take it you were not ' operating' our defence from a B&Q 6 X 4 shiplap shed ?

Whilst, the rest of us, were not even given a second fucking thought ?

Press the fucking button, it can't do much worse 'damage' than the European Socialists have done !

Fuck.. each, and everyone of them... with the rough end of a prickly pineapple.

Very good, Hari.

It would have depended on my deployment when the brown stuff hit the twirly thing.

I had a 50/50 chance of manning the comms in a hardened bunker or running my team from a standard office building.

Either way, we all agreed that we were fooked. We would have had to exit the bomb proofed buildings at some point to lock horns with the Ivans. My personal weapon was an SMG (9mm sub machine gun) and they were about as dangerous as a pea-shooter. Even a lass from Wallsend could simply bat the rounds out of her way as she kicked you swiftly in the gonads.

And yes, we did think about you lot. We were the meat shield. You were tucked up safe and warm...:)

What really, really grates is that the admission comes in an article that is unashamedly calling for more immigration and that views the problems caused by unchecked immigration as minor.

"Don't listen to the whingers - London needs immigrants"

We don't all need nannies and we don't all need cleaners.

London wouldn't need immigrants if the workshy buggers on benefits weren't living comfortably due to taxpayers. It is the benefits culture that attracts so many disparate spongers from abroad and it is the relative freedoms and earning opportunities that bring the productive foreigners here.

The state has set itself up as chief arse wiper for a great many people. The state has arrested our development to make the state indispensible. It has educated personal responsibility out of the youth of today. It has attempted to fracture communities along religious and ethnic lines so that it can, of course, stand between us 'keeping the peace'.

Immigrants are not the problem. A lack of integration is not a problem. They are the symptoms and merely two of a great many. The State is the problem. It stokes up hatred by favouring a shifting kaleidascope of minorities and pressure groups.

What I think is the case is that for 40 years we have been overseen by a great big bunch of chancers. They are incompetent. They have got too big for their boots. They have lied and cheated. They have become too greedy. They have pushed the interference of the state almost to the point of disaster - the state rarely does things correctly and is now demonstrably damaging lives left, right and centre, and we simply can't afford it in it's present engorged size. The boil must be lanced and a smaller, more responsive and less intrusive state needs to be the result.

Nazi repression?

Didn't they vote for the Nazis?

Or are we living under a NewLabour repression?

Let's get things into perspective.

I'm still paying additional tax in Germany for those workshy East German cunts. Go to Halle, or Frankfurt/Oder and have a look around. This stuff doesn't wash out in 20 years, so think about what we have to do to expunge what's been done to us.

BTW if you can speak German I can recommend North East Germany as most foreign tourists avoid the best bits.

OTOH the traitor Brown has fucked the pound so Englaender cannot afford it.

I had the "pleaure" of working in east Germany when the wall was up and the USSR just before Gorbechov got his foot in the door, We were isstalling machinary and all can say what fucking dumps in the USSR from what we saw they lived on potatoes and vodka I think if I had to live there I would spend a lot of time in the off license. East Germany was like looking at a black and white tv after the west at leasr we had a release date as soon as the machinery was up and running so were we in a westerly direction.

35.3% of those who could be bothered to turn out voted for ZanuLabour in 2005.

This got them 55% of the seats in the Commons, or a 156% ratio of seats to votes.

The Tories got 32.3% of the vote, but only 30.6% of the seats. The LibDems got 18.3% of the votes and 9.6% of the seats.

So you tell me; how would you describe having clear control of Parliament when 65% of voters said they wanted someone else? Or viewed another way, only about 21% of the adult population (well, the ones that we know about) actively asked for a ZanuLabour regime.

"Representative democracy under a first past the post constituency system demographically weighted towards traditionally left-leaning urban population centres"?

Bit of a mouthful, that. I'd go with "tyranny of the minority", or if I had to pick a single word, I could do worse than "repression".

Wasn't it much simpler when we just had the Ruskies to worry about? When the wall came down everyone expected a "peace dividend" - no more spending trillions on WMD's and toilet seats. It wasn't to be, however, for the Ruskies were soon replaced by the dreaded Muslim hordes.

Can't we just give peace a chance? Nah!
