How much?

Russell Brand, relaxing

I notice that the BBC is preparing the ground for OFCOM to insist that they spill the beans regarding how much of OUR money is used to keep the likes of Jonathon Woss in the style to which he has become rapidly accustomed.

This is the result of one man, whoever he may be, leaking the MP’s expenses file.

Excellent.

Now I want a list of the salaries of ALL public employees. If a bandage costs the NHS £13.50 when I can buy it in Superdrug for 79p, I want to know about it.

So in the spirit of transparency, copy and send to your town hall:

Dear Town Clerk (no, not CEO. You gave yourself that title, I didn’t)

As you work for me, spending my money, I’d like to know what you paid yourself last year and what you claimed on expenses. With receipts please. Oh, and your departmental heads as well.

When we’ve finished with that, I’d like to know the going price for:

A: A set of traffic lights
B: One bulb for a street lamp
C: A primary school meal.

Once I know, I’ll tell you if I can find any of it cheaper. Including yourself.

Love and Kisses

Very cute. You're planning on running for public office then?

If not, what's the point of this exercise?

Old Holborn said...

The point of the post is that accountability by those spending our money is the new black.

Always consider what would happen if you put government out to tender.

You'd cut the drain on the public purse at a stroke!

Good post OH!

OH,

To be fair to them Street light bulbs are long lasting and incredibly expensive to manufacture- not against the sentiment just a bad example.

This wouldn't work in Northern Ireland, we are tribal. Just as long as THEY don't get the money. In the south its worse, the papers are owned by relatives of the cunts at Town Hall.

Well.. I reckon it's good ole Bill Bailey after a weed induced overdose of Grecian 2000 meself.

Street lights eh? My local council pays £96+VAT for a 400W metal vapour bulb that I can get over the trade counter at the same wholesaler for just under £25 including VAT.

Our public servants have manifold ways of burning our money. It is my experience that they mostly just order stuff from their "approved suppliers" - another soddin scam. There are businesses that specialise in this activity which are generally preselected at the local lodge or on the golf course.

'course nobody ever said life was fair - if it's your own business and that's how you choose to carry on fair enough - but purchasing in most public bodies is deeply flawed and even straightforward theft isn't punished.

I suspect the crux of the problem is the connection between achievement and remuneration or complete lack that connection in public bodies. Achievement can be synthesised via the PR consultant.

On that basis my local council owe me considerably more than I pay them in council tax.

A vast pulling back of the curtain is what is needed.

The US Recovery website may be a good starting place. If you're in receipt of fiscal stimulus money via the Recovery Act you have to log the contract so that it ends up on that site.

Ever wanted to know how much stimulus money the US Department of Agriculture spent on canned pork for emergency food relief programs? Neither have I but at least you can find out.

Our Government loves databases so lets have lots of them. One for each Council and Department recording publically the taxpayer money they are spending.

Primary school meals. Piece of piss to do them cheaper, but cheaper and better is another matter.

Bad example methinks.

Start on the easy ones like "how many bank holidays will your staff be getting this weekend?"

Wrong!

The goverment is allready put out to tender and this is what you get, privatise it and this is still what you get.

corporate or state - same thing, though corporate has less accountability in a natural monopoly - owned and controlled by their chums as a tax on us or controlled by their chums through the goverment and a tax on us, but a smaller slice of the profits going into the corporate pocket.

This is why the state is making more partnerships with private companies, only these companies are not strictly private or open to all commers, nope, only the goverment backers get the rich pickings and we get taxed more than before with almost no comeback.

The corporates do not offer choice or cost savings, they are a mafia like racket that are out to milk and enslave you through their control of the goverment and the media for maximum profit and no real alternatives outside of their closed cartels.

This is why Branson gets such a rough deal from them even when he offers the best deal to the public, as he is not in their closed mafia loop.

So forget this bullshit - private is always better that the glibertarian twats keep spouting as it is often so corrupt and interconnected to the goverment and shadow goverment that it is often far worse and often more costly.

cornered private markets means exploitation and no accountability.

anyone think they are now getting massively cheaper water? council rates? electricty? did the government stop their interference in these areas?

Nah thought not, yet private enterprise has stripped these to the bone and made many people rich and many British people redundant.

But did you get a better deal?

Did you hell!

If these were truly open markets then perhaps you glibs may have a case, yet the whole high end of the captive market games is corrupt as a politician.

Transparency is the key to accountability.

Private / public is irrelevant

In the UK both are AWOL

It is not unreasonable to expect our public servants (both political and civil service)in time of peace to be fully transparent.

It would seem that they are not properly representing us and they are not properly serving us.

What to do eh?

The 2000 Bliar fuel protests got their attention....

What I don't get is the utter lack of attention to the grotesque price of electricity in the UK - the equivalent of £4 a liter for road fuel. Four times what M. Sarkozy's escargots across the channel pay.

Now, if you look at what Enron got up to in California and look at Labour's energy record....

If petrol was £4 a liter we'd have a new gubmint PDQ...

The example you gave re the bandage isnt far from the truth, An organisation called NHS supplies provides the NHS with much of its supplies and charges well above what anyone would consider reasonable. Any organisation supplying such a huge organisation should be able to knock prices right down not inflate them massively? Perusal of an NHS supplie catalogue with prices would be very illuminating.

Ah, NHS Supplies - paying £400 to repair a 15 year old laser printer that could be replaced with a new one with a 3 year warranty for <£200 - mmmm... priceless

The idiots of the state still place the orders with cash extorted from the taxpayer. Because they are halfwits or actual paid-off crooks they pay 10x the real cost that any sane person would pay. Get rid of all councils NOW!.

Transparency, yes I agree if there are enough uncorruopt players with the funds to tender for the maket, but what chance has transparency got when you are denied even a true democracy, almost zero accountability, a goverment run withour consent from Brussles via the global bankers and corporate giants, covered up and hushed up by a compliant corporate led media, a democracy totally manipulated by the the elite.

Util you break free of the global enslavers, you are simply giving them through current privitisation methods a licence to print and extort money using their wealth and power and the proceeds used to further enslave the world through, corrupt politicians, propaganda machines, countless quangos and anti democratic and anti free speech and anti liberty and pro war methods.

These few people are a global mafia.

Not confused at all, perhaps you cannot read glib, I am discussing captive markets that offer no real choice and that is how capitalism functions - on true free choice -
With regulation - yep state interference (yes glibs this is the real world)to prevent the problems i was discussing, something else the glibs tend to tie themselfs up in a knot with and fall over everytime they try and work out a policy based on their ideology that isn't just full of contradictions.

Just admit it you are a selfish Tory who gives not a shit for the greater good of society, even if it were to beefit yourself in the long term, where limited collectivism with strict guidlines can work efficiently in a true accountable democracy with performance incentives.

Not only work but benefit the majority, this is why the public demand it, why you are a tiny minority and why Thatcher damned the selfish Tories into opposition for a decade and left the Labour loonies to run amock and continue the social destruction the Tories had already handsomely achieved.

You free market extremists are no better than the communists!

Pragmatism, accountabilty/true democracy is where it's at, not some wonk ideological dogma you got from a book, a parent or some drivel movie.

The alternatives are where we are heading now which will be slavery of the rootless masses with a smaller and smaller group consolidating all the wealth and power, it's all going to plan.

Both current joke parties of so called left and right as well as non movement - glibs are stearing us on a course to total destruction and enslavement.

Why the glibs! because they have this free market mantra which will be used by the corporates and the right to justify the further consolidation of power into the already too powerful and corrupt corporations when this should be resisted.

It does not matter how well you refine your flawed goals the corporate giants and their media will use it regardless, you are jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire, consider the fire you are helping to fuel such as with the words of Hannan, now while Hannan does have a broader view and some Glibs do also, they are relying on a dogma, an uncompromising unpopular dogma and it is being picked up and used by the corporate press to consolidate the wealth and power into the hands that already abuse such wealth and power.

In short, until you can sort out the corporate corruption affecting goverment and that will include the Tories as much as Labour then the dissmantling of the public sector could be aboutout the worst move all FREEDOM loving people could make.

precisly, this is the whole point I am trying to make, the bankersn and coporates will own us in total with almost zero accountability and zero mmarket choice, that isn't anything more than a cartel.

But private is always better huh, glibs?
