Labour Policies should comfort the afflicted whilst afflicting the comfortable

This is a guest Post by Mike Ion of Labourlist

(Labourlist has since changed the title, original is in the link above)

Reading various blogs, websites and newspapers over the summer one cannot help but be struck by the number of so called left-leaning commentators who have been at pains to point out that the likes of David Cameron, George Osborne and Boris Johnson aren’t too bad and that if we do end up with a Tory government in a couple of years time it wouldn’t be such a disaster after all. Too many of the left's 'intelligentsia' appear to place punishing Brown and Labour for their collective ‘failings’ above the reality of the very real improvements to the lives and life chances of whole communities that were abandoned by the Tories in the 1980s and 1990s.

For many middle class bloggers and journalists, voting Tory or even Lib Dem is a luxury that they can easily indulge. Why? Because they are the very people who can afford to not have a Labour government in office - but the poor cannot.

Labour has a good record in terms of fighting poverty over the past decade: 600,000 children have been lifted out of poverty since 1997, the poorest fifth of families will be £4,000 a year better off by 2010 and the winter fuel allowance, pensioner credit and increases to the state pension have taken over 2 million pensioners out of poverty. The 10p tax fiasco was not a deliberate attempt by Labour to penalise the low paid, neither was it a calculated, cavalier act designed to appease middle England. It was, quite simply, a mistake – nothing more and nothing less.

The ‘talk left but act right’ tendency that is so prevalent in much of Britain’s media appears to have decided that Labour does not deserve another term. They are apparently untroubled by the fact that so many of the changes made since 1997 could end up being rolled back by a Cameron-led, right wing Tory government that could easily dismantle most, if not all, of the things that have been achieved.

If Labour does fail in winning a fourth term and is therefore unable to introduce further reform of public services then the Tories will find it almost impossible to resist the ideological temptation to demolish the very ethos on which they are built - with more charging, less investment, good services for the well-off middle classes and second-class services for the poor.

Labour used to be the party that gave comfort to the afflicted whilst afflicting the collective conscience of the comfortable. It needs to regain its sense of identity and purpose and above all it needs to remind people that under the Tories it is unlikely that things would get better but they could get a whole lot worse.

Who are the poor? Nobody in this country suffers from poverty.

Does the author mean those who contribute less and therefore get less? A lot of the 'middle classes' contribute the most and actually receive the least and yet they are vilified for their independence.

That is why Labour have failed, they reward 'need' however perceived and penalize effort.

This country has no values and sets no value on anything. It is time for real change.

Um No Labour has always been the party of envy. The party of empty promises, the party of giving to the many from the sweat of the few. Fuck the party of envy, fuck their broken promises and fuck the whole lot of the tax em and spend it brigade. What i fucking earn with the sweat of my brow should be mine to spend, or save as i see fit, not for these bunch of cunts to tax me more and more to support the feckless and idle. The labour party is a fucking joke and all who support it are turds.

So much for "socialism". The arse felching poof.

What a complete load of garbage. It is Labour that have an interest in keeping the poor down. It is in Conservative interest to help people to improve themselves, as they are then more likely to vote Conservative. Labour want as many people as possible dependent upon the bloated, corpulent state, people who are more likely to vote Labour.

The only way to lift people out of poverty is through good education and training and promoting the right attitude to work, not by increasing benefits and encouraging a mentality of entitlement - of rights rather than responsibilities.

WTF is Mike Ion? Does he have a job? A proper job that is, not one of the LGBT facility enablers so beloved of Labour?
How exactly could a Tory govt be any worse? Brown's govt is despised abroad & hated at home. Millions of £s of taxpayers money gone to prop up incompetent banks like RBS who then refuse to loan any of it to A1 credit holders (it happened to one of my friends last week). Jobless soaring, stats only being held in check by the creation of non-jobs under Lady Emma. People who can, leaving like the proverbial lemmings - even the Eastern Europeans are choosing life in their home country over life in Brown's Britain. Mike Ion= delusional fucktard.

Unless Labour completely change their management, into an elected management of real equality and not the 'positive discrimination' bollocks management, then they are doomed.

And doomed by none other than their own voters. This isn't 'your dads' Labour. It is a left wing militancy wearing the Labour brand to get what it wants, whether the population wants it or not. Brown and Mandelson could possibly have made a decent go at it if they were truly elected, too bad they have had to appease the loony left to get where they are.

Piss off or get pissed on, Labour.

Labour never stopped the rich being rich, only the poor being rich. We have seen over 3000 new "laws" brought in by Labour. We have seen the greatest DNA databse of innocent people on earth. Are Labourproud of their achievements? They shit on the graves of Allingham and Patch.

Normally, Labour could expect their core vote of benefit scroungers, thick Northerners and one legged lesbians to shore them up.

Except of course that Mandleson having anal sex with underage Moroccan boys, lording it up with Rothschild, Gadaffi etc and Blair having found God shortly after becoming a multimillionaire from killing close to a million innocent Iraqis is not exactly what your average Sun reader or benefit scrounger approves of.

I predict a monumental defeat for Labour unless they can manage to get the 1 million illegals to vote for them. Maybe Brown will embrace Islam.

Am I on the right blog? Who is this man? This poxy govt has spent the past 13yrs screwing everyone, rich, poor & indifferent alike, to the ground. They've taken the country's wealth-making mechanisms and cr@pped on them; they've introduced social engineering experiments at the expense of social mobility. They've robbed swathes of the population of their independence and dignity; they've taken away choice from everyone and replaced with rights and entitlements. In short, they've buggered up the country and it's time they were sent into oblivion. And this chap, can go with them.

Denial does seem to be a river in Egypt with this goon, doesn't it? Poverty's an attitude of mind in an era of cheap food, industrial surpluses of consumer goods and ample leisure time and good(-ish) medical care. For all but a few, it has been an option that all too many have taken.

But now the government's bet the whole economy on an inflationary housing bubble that's burst. All bets are off and this muppet hasn't noticed - because he can't. He's a dinosaur looking at the slowly growing light in the sky and ignoring it to take on more free meal

When I read stuff like this:

"600,000 children have been lifted out of poverty since 1997"

I realise it is Planet Zog. What does it actually mean? What have they been 'lifted' from and to? Do they have no parents?

"the poorest fifth of families will be £4,000 a year better off by 2010"

by definition, these families do not have a member in employment.

"and the winter fuel allowance, pensioner credit and increases to the state pension have taken over 2 million pensioners out of poverty"

Really? £250 ?? Try getting pension credit is you have saved a few quid, or have a house paid off. Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

This is a joke post right?

Listen you Labour fascist,
People wanted a referendum on Europe - You not only denied them a referendum, you mocked them and insulted their intelligence as you surrendered to an unaccountable foriegn goverment led by elite bankers and corporation lackys.

This has and will further take away the tiny amount of power the working class had - their vote.

80% of laws made in brussles - on what mandate?

and you back this?

You are a fascist!

Your party has helped to destroy democracy itself within this country, through an act of treason.

Not only do i hope Labour never see the light of day ever again I hope one day the traitors, Tories also will be brought to trial for treason!

Talking of war criminals, you party waged an illegal war based on lies, Killed thousands of inocents - children with their arms, legs and heads blown off and here you are supporting the party of war, death and torture?

For you banker and corporate oil friends, certainly not the poor!

Sure the Tories are scum, but what you are is beyond words.

As for the working class, You are hated by the working class far more than Maggie ever was - remember the working class do you, other than a few wonk stats often shown like everything else that comes from Labvour as Lies, lies, and more lies!

The ones whos fags and booze you tax to the limit, the ones who's pubs you can no longer smoke in even if all are consenting in a designated area? the ones who die of MRSA in the public hospital and the ones who have to compete for jobs with an ever increasing army of labour voting immigrants who have kept the poor Brits wages low when they should have risen - supply and demand.

Labour scum go away said...

Remember the poor? - such as the ones who have been ethnically cleansed from their homelands and towns where they are no longer welcome, where they no feel like strangers in the towen where their parents, grandparents and great grandparents etc, were raised, where no one speaks English and where the English face racist attacks in their hometowns simply for being English and Labour cover it up, while making a song and dance out of every ethnic that is attacked, streets where kids now kill each other with guns on a regular basis and gang rape and aids has increased accordingly.

But you want to give third world people real opportunity right?

Wrong! another big fascist Labour lie!

The skilled immigrants you steal from third world countries were desparately needed in their home countries which could barely afford to train them, you condem the third world to poverty by stealing their talent in order to undercut British wages, reduce working class opportunities/skilled training and ethnocide the British.

You have destroyed the working classes who you have done your utmost to ethnically cleanse, and then demonise and imprison should they not passively except your deliberate ethnic cleansing, You ban people from joining the police force if they do not agree with your parties ethnic cleansing policy!

You bar White british from jobs, such as the Police and other goverment posts.

Labour racists.

Labour Fascists!

Labour third world poverty creators!

Ethnic cleansing -

in order to path the way for the NWO EUSSR empire so the British are a minority voice which will no longer be heard, where the British working class suffer misery.

You could have reintroduced grammer schools and given working class kids a real chance of competing with the Tory private school kids and bridge the so called skills gap lifting working class communities helping them become something rather than condemining them to schools where no one speaks English, where the main emphasis is on anti white rascism and self loathing through wonk history lession where communist terrorists are lifted up as an example to the children as someone great.

Tories are selfish bastards but Labour are simply sick in the head, a bunch of middleclass tossers playing at a social experiment they don't understand and never suffer the consiquences that has gone badley wrong while selling the people out for profit to big corporations and bankers, even doing everything possible to undermine democracy itself!

I was going to (attempt) to write something witty, but words failed me.

Nu Labour need to be punished. They need to be punished for the many things they have done wrong, and also for the many things they should have done but didn't.

Is it too much to ask for a government to secure electricity generation capacity? Is it too much to ask for children to leave primary schools able to read and write? Is it too much to ask for the Government to get their cameras out of my face? Couldn't the Police be persuaded to catch some criminals? And I'm still waiting for my referendum.

Those that govern by the headline should also perish by the headline. We just need to work out how to keep the next lot honest.

Shite! - It was incompetence of the highest order, carried out by a corrupt regime that now speak at, and not too their core supporters, to the point that many of these people now see the Socialist far Right as their most supportable option.
The fucking working classes detest you Mr Ion, but your heads now located so far up your own self righteous backsides, that you just carry on regardless, as if on a mission from some higher Socialist source.

Can't be Christianity though, - As the grinning buffoon himself once famously remarked - "New Labour don't do God". - They don't do fucking common sense either from what I can ascertain.

Please Mr Ion - Just fuck off, and take the shower of shite that you purport to represent away into the distance with you, there's a good New Labour Socialist!

The problem I have with this piece, apart from the fact that most of it is simply incorrect, is that Labour have a longstanding record of not helping the poor.

Ensuring that someone gets a steady income stream, supplied either by taxing those better off than they or by borrowing money doesn't actually help the poor person in any way other than short-term; sooner or later the policy of taxing one group to pay another leads to the group you're subsidising burgeoning in size, and the taxed group shrinking in size and learning the many and devious ways of dodging taxation.

So it is that after a decade of redistribution of wealth we have a huge number of poor and needy liars breeding like rabbits and polishing sob-stories for the DSS, a shrinking middle class and a rather larger number of super-rich people enjoying a life of ease whilst laughing at the attempts of the Government to tax them.

Taxing the rich never works; they didn't get rich by being stupid and they don't stay rich by being stupid either; they are rich enough and smart enough to pay people to preserve their fortunes.

Subsidising the poor doesn't work, either; if you subsidise anything, you get more of it.

Failing to grasp the above qualifies you for membership of the Labour Party, but very little else.

Mike's own voters disagree. That's why in places like Stoke on Trent, they are deserting. Since the Labour government came in it has failed the city abysmally. Labour now holds only 16 of the 60 city seats - and it probably only manages that by over-inflating the city council employment roll and a form of paying out its supporters.

It's a pyramid scheme. So long as Labour can find one more real taxpayer to fund a pretend-job, they can keep the pyramid from collapsing. However, there are now pitifully few people making real money and it is only a question of when the people in the pyramid have to be told - before they find out when their paycheck bounces.

If you want to know all there is to know about Labour Britain and its future, just look at Stoke on Trent.
