Quango Time!

There are 1,162 quangos in the UK, running at a total cost to the taxpayer of £64 billion, equivalent to £2,550 per household. Even under the Cabinet Office’s restrictive definition of quangos, the cost of these bodies has risen 50% in the last ten years.

UK quangos now employ an army of almost 700,000 bureaucrats.

Even the Government itself does not know the full extent of the unaccountable quango industry, which range from the massive e.g. Job Centre Plus (Staff: 70,042, Cost: £3.5 billion) and the Courts Service (Staff: 19,986, Cost: £704.8 million); to the bizarre e.g. the British Potato Council (Staff: 49); or the West Northants Development Corporation (Staff: 34, Cost: £15.3 million)

When the total number of quangos is added to the other government subsidiaries such as local authorities and NHS trusts, the total number of organisations controlled by the UK Government rises to 2,063, costing the taxpayer £257 billion and employing over 5.1 million people.

Most of these quangos should either be scrapped or reduced to about 5% of their size.

Don't forget the Environment Agency. That is huge (and expensive).

The Environment Agency was established by the 1995 Environment Act and became fully operational on 1 April 1996. The Agency is a Non-Departmental Public Body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and an Assembly Sponsored Public Body of the National Assembly for Wales. It employs around 13,000 staff and in 2006/07 had an operational budget of around £1.002bn, of which £603m was grant from the Agency's sponsoring Government Departments.

Now you know.

These quangos are the epitomy of socialism and state control. Most are worse than useless, all suck up vast amounts of taxes. I would like to see a campaign to get as many as possible shut down, but for now, we should pick on one. Single it out, mock it. Write to your trougher.Start an on-line petition. I believe the Potato Marketing Board recently sent Cheggers around the country to find the best chip. In other areas people are dying for lack of funding. The madness must stop.

When the revolution comes there are going to be a fucking lot of people jobless as all those quangos are chopped.

Can't stand Cameron but if the man kills the quangos he'll go up in my estimation.

Is it still a tax if it's not the Government collecting it?

The British Potato Council doesn't get any money from the Government. It just has a compulsary levy on every seed potato grown for commercial gain in the country.

Nice monopoly if you can get it.

The West Northants Development Corporation ! What about East Northants - fucking splitters!

I work in an industry that has direct contact with the Environment Agency. What a disfunctional waste of fucking time they are. Most of the time you don't get regulated in line with rules you can read but in line with the opinion of the waste of fucking space they appoint to inspect you. If you want to change something - you need to jump through a shit load of hoops to meet their approval. If you want to leave it the same, they object. Its like some bizarre "think of a number and I'll tell you if you're right" game.

There's one near us called National Milk Records. I never knew they existed until I gave someone a lift there one day. These guys apparently track the milk quality and yield of every cow in the UK.

Seriously important work and worth every penny of my fucking taxes that pay for this crap.

An official Devon County Council roadsign near Exeter reads
" Church Lane ( No Access To DEFRA ) "

Church Lane is the only access to DEFRA ( part of the Environment Agency and responsible for the disgraced Rural Payments Agency ), anyone might think they were trying to hide from us.
