A point that you may be missing is that at least in Britain, it was never the State that condemned someone to death, but a jury. You could say that judges and policemen might be complicit in the State's murderous plans, but surely this would be very unlikely to extend to all twelve jurists, who are randomly selected people from the population at large? That's the point of the jury trial - no wonder NuLab hates them.
OH, any sufficiently onerous punishment you might dream up in place of death will be just as irreversible.
I don't view death as a punishment in this sort of case, just a cost-effective form of waste disposal.
One thing is for sure. He might not be dead, as he should be, but he will wish he was once in prison and having his arse fucked every single day.
