I auditioned for Depeche Mode. Didn't get the gig. I didn't live in Essex at the time. Now I do.

There's a message in there somewhere.

Rab C. Nesbitt said...

In no particular order- Big Country, The Seer. AC-DC, Back in Black. Green Day, American Idiot. Nirvana, Nevermind. Tom Petty, Full Moon Fever.

the man who fell back to bed said...

have you heard Chris Rea and Dire Straits are recording an album together?

they're going to call it Chris Straits.

Reimer said...

Dire STRAIGHTS? The noted heterophobic JJ Cale-derived Gay stadium rock group whose album 'Bummers In Arses' defined the mid-80s, spawning the single 'Money For Knobbing' whose video was in such heavy rotation on the HIV music channel?

Thought not.

I've warmed to Knopfler's lot, now that they are no longer so utterly ubiquitous (ditto Phil Collins solo stuff)

five ain't enough

forgot Frank Zappa - weasels ripped my flesh.

And no room for Warren Zevon's life'll kill ya. Contains the classic track "my shit's fucked up". For some reason that just never got the airplay it deserved.

Mr. Jolly said...

Well, you got one right at least, but FFS, Seal? Jeez! Anyway, here are the votes from Jolly Towers: -

1. Ace of Spades - Motorhead
2. Nevermind - Nivana
3. Never Mind The Bollocks - The Sex Pistols
4. Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables - The Dead Kennedys
5. Killing Joke - Killing Joke

(Bubbling under:)

Magazine - The Correct Use Of Soap
The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Ian Dury And The Blockheads - New Boots And Panties
ELO - Out of The Blue (Yeah, I know, I know, but there needs to be at least one 'guilty pleasure' in this list.)

1. Swordfish Trombones - Tom Waits
2. The Soft Bulletin - The Flaming Lips
3. Remain In Light (agree 100%, fucking great album)
4. The Bends - Radiohead
5. Sgt Peppers (and fuck every poncey critic who says Revolver)

Check Your Head by the Beastie Boys and Songs For The Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age are close runners up.

I used to be a sound engineer so my opinion cannot be challenged.

Sweet Baby James James - Taylor
Automatic For The People - REM
Greatest Stories Live - Harry Chapin
Live in Paris - Supertramp
Ad Nauseum - Derek and Clive

There is some music on the Derek and Clive album so I reckon it counts, quite inspiring when writing comments on here, for example, "They're all cunts out there" serves well for most situations.

Guess where I live said...

1. A Criminal Record - Clayton Blizzard
2. Ideas and Oh Dears - Kid Carpet
3. Virtute Et Industria - Bronnt Industries Capital
4. Bizali - Bizali
5. Sea Shanties for the Far Inland - Men Diamler

Remain in Light is rather good, though.

Queen - Night at the Opera
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Fleetwood Mack - Rumours

We are a bunch of oldies on here, aren't we?

Magazine - Secondhand Daylight
Jacques Brel - Amsterdam
Santana - Abraxas
George Benson - Live in LA
Toots and the Maytals - Best of

would be my pick, but then I'm odd ;o)

I used to play guitar in a duo with Sean Burke of Tubeway Army.

He was a shit guitarist. REALLY shit.

Michael Fowke said...

1. Sunflower - The Beach Boys

2. Pacific Ocean Blue - Dennis Wilson

3. Apollo - Brian Eno

4. Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan

5. Exile On Main Street - The Rolling Stones

But I might change my mind tomorrow.

Antipholus Papps said...

Exile On Main Street! Yes indeed!

@Electro Kevin:
How on earth can you say that 'Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits' is their best album? That doesn't count at all mate. Choose one of their albums, not a record company executive's idea of what made them successful!

Antipholus Papps said...

@bofl:

Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane both piss all over Ziggy Stardust!

And personally, I think Led Zep III is ever so slightly more awesome than Led Zep II. But I'm open to argument, both are great.

(Once worked on a Japanese cover of Immigrant Song - fucking hilarious but I've unfortunately lost the DAT!)

Blas said...

Ever noticed how lefties are always the first to dismiss your taste in music?

Telling.

Blas said...

Bon Iver - Bon Iver

Not so much as 'greates ever' more my current faves.

Other Steve said...

I wonder if Antipholus Papps knows the irony in his post?
