Keeping the lid on

We get exercised by nine demonstrators in Luton, in the Marais district in Paris, the car burnings continue.

And the boys from the Met are getting some winter sunshine-

Athens - Experts from the British police organization Scotland Yard are to aid Greece in battling an ongoing wave of violence and crack down on radical leftwing underground organizations, the Kathimerini newspaper reported Sunday. The help from Scotland Yard, the first of which is to arrive in Greece on Monday, comes after contacts at the highest level between the governments in Athens and London, the report said.

Who are these experts trained in dealing with radical leftwing underground organisations ?

Might help if they tried sorting out it out at home first. How many Londoners stabbed to death this year ?

Isn't it heart-warming to see such cross-border co-operation flourishing in this new global age? Let's hope they're tied up for months so we can get on with our own Summer of Rather Put-Out in peace.

Labour have become very much "National Socialists". The EU stormtrooper scheme is well underway. Abolish Mr, Mrs, Miss etcetera. Be numbers only soon. You heard it here. Snotty looks more and more like Stalinbean every day.

Is Christian Wolmar as big an idiot as his site suggests?

Help from Scotland Yard?

They are over there to learn how hard the local forces can hit people without actually killing them. Just for research purposes.

AC1 - that's wierd. Wolmar's name turned up a few days ago on this article from 2001.
How did it happen again?

He certainly wasn't an idiot then - he makes a plausible argument about why our social services have failed so often in the matter of child protection and he backs it up with observations over many years of covering those cases. The core of his argument is:

"it became clear to me that social work took a wrong turn in the late 1960s. Until then, there had been a series of welfare services which focused on particular groups of those in need - the elderly, children, the homeless and so on. The Seebohm report changed all that, creating "generic" social workers without any particular expertise."

The article was written just after Climbie, and those with a professional insight - such as Anna Raccoon - might disagree with Wolmar's conclusions, but he seemed capable of building a coherent argument in 2001.

I suppose a "left/rightwing underground radical organisation" is the general public actually doing something against troughing scum abusing power?

The story in the Kathimerini newspaper changed around 11:50 from Scotland Yard assisting with tackling a wave of violence to "The British police delegation is expected to focus on helping Greek counterparts tackle an emerging terror threat.". Best new bit is "Sir Ian Blair, one of the world’s top counter-terrorism experts, is also expected to visit Athens over the next few days to provide his insight into the problem.". Consultantcy fees and Trebles all round.

So who the f*** is Christian Wolmer? Apart from being a leftie self styled expert I mean? How realistic are his credentials then? Move over Dolly Draper, your position as t*** of the week has been taken over.
Wonder if the Greeks realise Blair's De Menezes history? Perhaps someone should tell the public through Greek English speaking websites?

In the 'post combat' phase of the Iraq war it was said the Americans would benefit from the British army's experience of riot control in Northern Ireland.

Not long afterwards, in disturbances following a demonstration, American soldiers shot 13 civilians dead...

So who the f*** is Christian Wolmer?

I've generally found him to be quite coherent on public transport matters. He seems to be a career journalist rather than having hands-on experience in the field, but he seems to know his stuff.

The credibility of his "considered opinion" on matters outside his specialist subject is another matter altogether.

(Mind you, I can't say I've had a decent hands-on experience in a field for quite a long time. Or an indecent one, either.)
