Sec 76 Protests

Old Holborn and "Fatima"

A Home Office spokesman said: "For an offence to be committed, the information would have to raise a reasonable suspicion that it was intended to be used to provide practical assistance to terrorists. Taking photographs of police officers would not, except in very exceptional circumstances, be caught by this offence

If you believe this you will believe anything

This from a serving Police Officer on Devils Kitchen

This is very odd. Speaking as a serving officer, I would have thought that we would have been fully jemmed up on this law, seeing how it is (apparently) for our safety. Yet neither I, nor any of my colleagues know anything about it. I wasn't actually aware that I was in so much personal danger that this jaw-droppingly draconian law was needed. Am grateful for those in the blogosphere bringing it to my attention because I would have know sod-all about it otherwise.

What a great demo!

Routine misuse of terrorism legislation is endemic whether it's your wheelie bin out of kilter or you are on Labour's national executive. If they can do it to Walter Wolfgang they can do it to anybody.

Please let me know if there is an ongoing campaign to repeal section 76

I've now got both Flickr and Vox accounts because my Nokia N95 8GB comes with these applications built in.

That way as soon as I take a photo I can upload it to one of these accounts. Fuck all they can do then.

I recommend using a relatively low image quality to speed transmission.

Like a lot of the legislation brought in under Labour it is almost certainly unneccessary. The MO of this Government is to take whatever the Police say as the truth and enact increasingly specific and potentially draconian legislation, often seemingly beyond the old checks and balances of right and proper justice. It isn't that they might be abused, it's that we know they will be abused.

This tending towards specifity is due to the box ticking mentality. Texting while driving (eh Lord Ahmed?) is simply driving without due care and attention it doesn't need to be a seperate offence! This need for more and more specific offences and more and more tractor statistics is becoming the undoing of civil society. Every offence is arrestable and they are creating more and more offences.

Some more pics here under a Sun-esque groan-inducing headline.

... and mc_nebula chased after a guy taking pics of us in the pub. He didn't like that much.

mc_nebula said...

Yea, well, the guy was standing outside the pub, taking "discreet" pictures of us on his phone, you know, hold it to his ear for a few seconds, then, up pointing at us, then, his ear again, from different sides.

I went over for a friendly chat and asked if he was a journalist, he simply turned and walked off. Very rude, don't you think? So, I walked after him, and asked why he was taking pictues of us, all he would say was, "I don't want to talk to you" and produced a newspaper and held it up in front of his face... Very rude, don't you think? I would have followed him onto the tube, but I had left my camera and bag with Dick and co...

I really want to know why he was so hostile... I have no problem with him taking piccys, he can take all he wants... it was his hostility...

Fuck them.

Glad to hear the photography session went off well. Couldn't be there to see it for myself but I thank the people who were.

Wonder how many more people will gradually be given the 'protection' of s.16?

"How about EVERYBODY wearing burka's next time? That will be an interesting decision from the Police."

Yes, yes, fantastic idea. let's have a burka event in mid summer, that really would fuck with their tiny little minds wouldn't it?

it's either banned or compulsory said...

Which is just what the Police will be able say to enable an arrest under suspicion each and every time you get your mobile 'phone out in public and confiscate it.

I'm buying shares in Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and anyone else who makes the things.

I have several pics that show that we were being filmed on CCTV at all times when we were there.

There is no way that we have escaped any of the CCTV footage Anyone who went there is on CCTV for sure

Thank you wide angle lens

I wish I had known about this protest I would have turned up. If only there were a site that specialised in listing anti-government protests.
