Ever been on shinkansen in Japan? It will blow you away.

Apart from being fast and on-time to the second, they are wide and comfortable (wider loading gauge than UK). There are three toilets between carriages, two Japanese style (males and females) and one european style. Scrupulously clean. The european one will wash and perfume your backside if you want. Opposite the toilets are two washbasin suites. Soaps, hand cream, towels all totally clean.

Well-dressed smart ticket inspector enters carriage, closes door behing him, whilst facing passengers, bows, welcomes everyone. Walks down the aisle, checks tickets with his hand-held computer and notes your seat. He wears gloves becuase he handles your ticket. Doesn't have to shout 'anyone join at Swindon?'. He knows.

There is absolutely no reason why this sort of kit can't be built here. Jeez, we have a lot to thank Attlee and unions for.

Nah, don,t worry about working geezers, just slag em off for being lazy bastards, and count the dividend you got when our manufacturing base was flogged off.

We had a perfect opportunity to actually start making things again.

Gone

Just listened to someone on R4 saying that just because we will have Japanese trains, unless we think and act like Japs, the whole thing will just be a farce.

He's right.

We can still make trains, there's a lovely shiny new steam train just been built and commissioned. Fits our rails and bridges and runs on coal, of which we have plenty.

Back to the Future, you know it makes sense!

Disagree OH, we are not the japanese, and we can make things, fifty years ago we led the world in aviation, electronics, medical research, all long term enterprises, but the people who rule us and the inhabitants of leafy suburbs look down on these things, not the sort of thing a gent would do is it? No , lets play with bits of paper and pretend we are powerful and important.

They poke their nose into something they don't, understand, suck out the value, destroy for short term profits and allow to wither and die, thats the British way, and because of this Britain itself will wither and die.

the current rollig stck does not have to be replaced for 10 years.......could we build a factory and get skilled workers in that time?

of course........

if we carry on like this in 10 years tome nobody will travel on the railways because there will be no jobs to go to or anyone that can afforf the fares.

The contract has gone to Japan for one reason and one reason only.

Cost.

The Labour Party. We know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

Unfortunately the boiler had to be made in Germany as we no longer have a suitable manufacturing facility.
And to add insult to injury the propellers on the BBMF aircraft are also made in Germany....
