How weak have we become?

A British Family

Leg-iron here again. OH has invited me to repost this little message here. So I have. I hope it transfers without any messing up of links.

First, a parable. Apply it to whatever you like.

There was once an unfenced hill where a flock of sheep lived.

One rainy day, a man came to talk to them. "It's cold and wet here. How can you stand it?" he asked.

"It's not so bad," said the sheep. " We get up when we like, there's plenty to eat, and life is pretty good most of the time. It's raining now but we can just go under the trees if it gets too much. It will stop eventually. We have our freedom, and to us that's the most important thing."

"It looks awful," the man said. "And how do you know it will stop raining? It might go on for weeks. Your land might become swampy and all your grass might be washed away. Tell you what, there is a big building over there. It's warm and dry inside. I will make it let you in. It's only fair. You deserve better than this."

"Is there grass to eat?" the sheep asked.

"No, but I will make the building provide hay. I will make it provide a place to sleep and food to eat and you need do nothing to earn it. You'll be warm and dry and still you'll be free. Really, it's best to take my offer just in case, don't you think? Surely you can see it's for your benefit?"

Some of the sheep were suspicious. "What do you get out of it?"

"Me? Nothing." The man smiled. "And once in a while, I'll invite the most special of you to come and live in a special flock where life will be more wonderful than you have ever known. Of course, you won't all be able to join that flock at once but I promise, every one of you will pass through the Golden Doorway eventually."

The sheep considered. A few distrusted the man and refused to go with him, but most accepted his kind offer. They laughed and scoffed at those who chose to stay in the rain while they filed obediently into the man's dry, warm abbatoir.

And now, a rant.

Does anyone remember the 'stiff upper lip' of the British? The fighting spirit? The indomitable people who once ran a big chunk of the planet, and who could chase away armed guerillas with a walking stick and an angry voice? A people who, nevertheless, could laugh at themselves and had a great, if sometimes cruel, sense of humour? What happened to them?

Those people would never have set off a security scare because
a schoolboy dressed up as the Joker and waved a plastic gun around. Those people would never have arrested a man in fancy dress because he had a plastic knife as part of his outfit (tipped by anon in the comments here). Those people would not have shrieked 'Terrorist!' at the sight of a plastic halloween skeleton. The first might have earned a caning, but not expulsion. The second and third should not even have raised an eyebrow. Neither should Old Holborn's walk.

The people who replaced those real British are spineless weaklings who jump at shadows. Who call the police if they are slightly offended by a word or two. Worse, the police respond not by saying 'It's nothing, don't worry about it', but by harassing and usually arresting anyone complained about, no matter how trivial and all too often, no matter whether an offence has been committed or not.

These new people are quaking, trembling jellys. They are frightened by mere words, and terrified by a raised hand. They take offence at anything they're told to take offence at. Those who consider themselves strong are those who have not yet experienced adversity because when they do, they run to the government for help. They cannot help themselves. They will not try.

Oh, there are a few real people left, for sure, but they are only a few. Most are now soft, weak loathsome creatures who stare at the unreality of reality TV from their well-pressed sofas and aim their rage wherever the Righteous tell them. The two minute hate. One day smokers, next day drinkers, next day hoodies, next the obese, next Eurasia... or is it Eastasia? Doesn't matter. We are at war with the terrorists. We have always been at war with the terrorists.

These people who once called themselves the Great of Great Britain (can we still use that name for this country, or is it not considered sufficiently self-humiliating now?) are useful only for rendering into animal feed. They accept every word they are fed and have no problem at all with the doublethink required to accept it all. Coal-fired power stations will kill us all through global warming. We must build huge windmills everywhere to save the environment and we must not install new power lines underground because that would harm the environment. Snow in October? That's caused by global warming.

They obsess about their carbon footprint while having no idea what carbon is, they accept that the same number of alcohol units apply to each and every person, that if they allow a ninety-year-old smoker within a hundred yards of them in the open air, they will die the next day from lung cancer. They accept that one ageing rock perv who everyone recognises because his face has been all over the news will sneak up unnoticed and steal their children, and they accept that social services can take children from parents for any reason they feel like making up.

They accept that everything that happens to them is someone else's fault and that they are entitled to compensation for it, and they accept that events on the other side of the planet are all the fault of the British.

Doublethink. All of it. And those minds, once the envy of the world, are now so numb and feeble that they cannot see any contradiction in the information drifting into them. None of it is sorted, categorised, analysed or considered. Every last bit of nonsense is accepted as if God himself delivered it to them.

Today I heard that
Sainsbury's is offering education, including basic literacy and maths education to its staff. Good God, what is going on when the supermarkets have to do the job our schools once did? Basic literacy and maths. Hardly a part-time degree, is it? They have set a target of 25% of staff having a qualification within five years. While I think what Sainsbury's is doing here is commendable, the fact remains that they should not have to. We used to have schools. Now we have indoctrination centres and that is just accepted by those sofa-bound parents. They will see no contradiction in wasting years at school only to start earning basic GCSE's after a spell of trolley-pushing.

When did this happen? When was the spirit sucked out of the people of this country? It was no overnight thing. It started small and spread like fungus throughout the land. It began with the best intentions, as these things always do. It began when those who had no jobs were entitled to a small government payment to keep them going until they found work. That, in itself, was not the problem. Work was always the better option and the dole was an embarassing place to be. Oh, yes, there were a few who were happy with that dole cheque and happy to sit back and do nothing but for most, it wasn't enough.

Then came free housing, free gas and electricity, a host of freebies and a wide range of tax-funded benefits until unemployment was more profitable than most of the lower-paid jobs. The idea that those lower-paid jobs were just a start, that they could lead into better-paid jobs, seems to have been lost. The people settled back to claim, spend, and claim some more. Their bodies fell into disuse, their brains atrophied by the drivel pouring from the little box in the corner. That box now occupies half the wall in some living rooms, in accordance with its status in those people's lives. In many houses, most rooms have them. You can even buy pocket ones. The mind-numbing output is everywhere.

Now they are confused by contradictions their conditioning insists they accept without question. Why question, when some vestige of their minds already knows there is no answer? Just accept it and have another beer. Drown the confusion with a chaser of something fluorescent. Bodies flaccid, minds baffled, they accept that they are obese because they eat the wrong kind of food, not because they eat too much and do too little. It's not their fault, you see? If only they had more benefits, they could afford fruit to eat while they watch three hundred channels on their 60-inch flatscreen with surround sound. The contradiction is whisked away by doublethink.

There are a few real people left. Some who are fit and healthy, some with intelligence, some to whom these contradictions are obvious. A few who would, if they could, wake up the zombies the British have become and urge them once more to innovate, to fend for themselves, to reach for those stars they once looked up to see.

To dismiss insulting words not as 'offensive' but as 'the ramblings of a fool'. To stand up for those rights they once had instead of allowing them to be taken away one by one. To think their own thoughts once more. To see those contradictions for what they are, and to analyse and deny them. To take back their lives.

Can they be woken? I am sure some can. I am sure some of the British can be revived. If I thought there was no hope at all I would not be writing this.

For many, it's far too late. For many, there can be no escape from that sleep they believe to be real life. They will spend their time displaying Pavlovian offence at anything that is pointed out to them. They will bleat 'Baaan' on command. They will enjoy the daily two minute hate, and agree like those sheep that while they can no longer do the things they used to enjoy, the slaughterhouse is at least warmer than the field. Those are the British now. Those are the 'vast majority' the Righteous love to quote at dissenters.

It can be dangerous to wake sleepwalkers, and we know that the shepherds will try to prevent it, but if we do nothing then that abbatoir will expand up our hillside until it is covered. In the end, the choice is simple. Take the risk or join them in the warmth of oblivion.

The rain does stop. They just need to be reminded of that.

Sir, I have never blogged before, but, I was so moved by your words. I agree with you totally, but, have little, or no hope for the future of the Country of my Birth.

There is more to my thoughts but, I dare not write them here, and, I think that having been Overseas for many years and having a respite in the UK just now, and having worked with various Governments and many, many people all over the world, there are a lot of people out there who do give a dam. Having said that unless and until the Tories catch a huge wake up, this Country is going to sleep walk into another Labout Government. Must go now and wipe the tears from my eyes.

And this is what Jacqui Smith says we are:

"Today in the UK we are lucky to live reasonably comfortable lives. We live with relatively few mortal risks – our day to day lives ordered and peaceful."

We've been absolutely control-freaked into this state by the state. It'll take a revolution to wake people up on the scale that makes the century seem small by comparison. Except that they tend to end up with the country run by some other daft despot. We're doomed until that happens. This said, I woke up.

The children of this country have been drip-fed socialist drivel since 1946.They now constitute a political class of mind numbing stupidity. There will be no progress untill the economic catastrophe they are delivering to us has decimated our national wealth. They may wake up..they may not. When the weekly soc.sec.cheque cannot be met..they just may pause to wonder what the fuck happened to them.

What a superb rant - couldn't agree more.

There was a piece on State Radio 4 this morning, about children as young as 3 - YES, THREE - being expelled from their nurseries for being foul-mouthed and ill-disciplined. Mention was made about ill-discipline in kids of all ages.

There was a huge whinge that no-one respects teachers any more, and that they are leaving the profession in droves.

The parents are those being ranted about on this post, methinks.

Crap parents lead to crap kids, leads to crap parents ad inf. These twats depend on the state for their hot-tubs, gallons of wife-beater and benefit cheques.
Socialists, Labour voters, controlled and paid by the state.

We've sleep-walked into this shit state, through a lack of discipline and self-respect. We brought it on ourselves, I'm afraid.

Thank fuck a few of us have woken up. Put the word around, we need to recover, and fast.

Good post, but I am afraid I see little hope for the future. I try not to think too much about where we are going in this country. I get very angry and I wish I could do something, but what? A lot of people don't seem to want to know what is happening. The number of arguments I have had about id cards. 'I had one when I was in the army, it is no big deal' and 'Well, we are all on databases anyway, so another one doesn't make any difference' are typical of the comments I get. Sometimes I wonder if it is better to just give up fighting and submit to the inevitable. I just hope my kids don't have kids, the future is very bleak.

That could do with being put in print and pushed through every letterbox in the country ... and down one or two tossers throats. Great rant Leg-Iron, it brings such clarity to the state of this country.

'Normal' is becoming nothing more than wanting to be cheese and sauce consuming beast slobbed out in front oh Ant'n'Dec with nothing more substantial to talk about than the weather and nothing weighter to read than a copy of Heat and the Daily Fail. Fuck 'em. You can't talk to them. They won't listen to you. What's wrong is that that they haven't got enough money, end of story, that's all they care about.

We live in a country where the majority are preoccupied with eliminating all pain, all suffering, all boredom.. any and even the slightest negative emotion is a sign of failure - goes double for your kids. In attempting to flee from even the slightest hint of pain they deprive themselves of the ability to feel joy because they've nothing to compare it to. The better they are at avoiding chores, avoiding work, relaxing, cutting corners, procrastinating and spending every waking moment in engaged in whim fulfilment, the more miserable and depressed they get, the more they hit the booze and the grass and before you know it you've got subhuman meat sacks for friends that bore you so much you don't bother talking to them any more.

What's the cause of this? Why have we reduced ourselves to subhuman meat sacks?

It's this attitude, dominant in our society: If you can't do something, it's someone else's fault.

"If I can't understand you, you should make it more understandable. If I find you boring, you should make it more interesting. If I find something too hard, you should make it easier. If something takes too long to learn, you should find a way to teach it quicker or, you know, cut things out. Just give me the basics, you know?"

Yeah. You know, in a recession, I'm kinda glad that I'm up against such docile empty creatures. Survival of the fittest, and all that...

This about the rise and fall of nations - Egypt, Carthage, Rome, Troy, Athens, Sparta, Mecca, Atilla, Genghis Khan, Charlemagne, Xerses, Sulamain et al.

We fight, struggle, work hard and develop character. Then in a few generations we become soft, indulgent and socialist and are fucked. It happens in families too. Where are the great American dynasties - broke and in drug rehab.

Remember the 70's here. Tax at 98% on unearned income. Many of the best left these shores weakening our gene pool. It will happen in post Brown's Britain - an exodus of the Good Britains.

Sadly our time has passed. We who remain should not give up because then looking in the mirror is a painful exercise.

Dear Mister Old Holborn, you've caught your cause and effect the wrong ways about and back to fronty. It didn't start with giving stuff away, it started with the planning, regulations and persecution. Nanny was a scold long before she was handing out sweeties, she was whipping the bad children long before she offered space in her petticoats to the good.

G. K. Chesterton explains here, in glorious fashion- written in 1913, published in 1922, long before Attlee and his Welfare State. It was the Temperance League and child snatching well before supplementary benefit...

"In short, people decided that it was impossible to achieve any of the good of Socialism, but they comforted themselves by achieving all the bad. All that official discipline, about which the Socialists themselves were in doubt or at least on the defensive, was taken over bodily by the Capitalists. They have now added all the bureaucratic tyrannies of a Socialist state to the old plutocratic tyrannies of a Capitalist State. [...] Now this anomalous situation will probably ultimately evolve into the Servile State of Mr. Belloc's thesis. The poor will sink into slavery; it might as correctly be said that the poor will rise into slavery. That is to say, sooner or later, it is very probable that the rich will take over the philanthropic as well as the tyrannic side of the bargain; and will feed men like slaves as well as hunting them like outlaws. "

Nineteen. Twenty. Two. Our enemy have been winning for a very long time now.

A very clear and accurate discription of the English/British situation as it is.
Whats the point of having a history or culture if we do not relate to it. All this hard won experience is of no use if we ignore it. Lessons learnt the hard way are discarded for some kind of new way which flies in the face of history to our detriment. Do we feel that the problems of the world are our responsibility? Do we feel that because we have solved many of the mysteries of the world that we are somehow guilty because other cultures and nations are still not as developed as ours? Is the achievements we have made here in Brition so unacceptable to other in the world that we have to accept less than we should so they can feel included?
As a person who was born and brought up in another country I feel qualified to have an opinion on coming to this country for my own safety and well being. When I came here I had to accept that this country, Brition, was much better than the one I was born in and the last thing on my mind was bringing the useless bagage of that country with me. There are many millions of people who would give their right arm to be here, they que up for days at the British Embassy to apply for permission to come here, leaving behind all the ties that bind. The over riding fact is that they need to get out. So by making this effort they emotionally, physically and actually accept that their country is not a place where they can improve their circumstances.
Others risk life and limb to get here and others are allowed to just turn up and usually are given leave to stay.
The people of this country are the most tolerant people on this earth, bar none. Tolerate even the intollerant and in return get to be ridicule and abuse this great country in public without fear of retribution by the people or the state. Where else in the world would a person get so many benifits without even paying a penny into the system? But it is still not enough, the culture that they found so oppresive is the one they insist be allowed and respected. Mean while the British culture is disrespected and vilified as racist, unfair and immoral.
I cannot understand why the British people stand for it. As a Brition try moving to another country and try that, see how well that attitude is accepted?
I would have thought that the people coming here would do their utmost to be at least as British as the British and be grateful for the chance to have a new life. Some do and we are better for it but many many others have absolutely no desire to do so and indeed reject completly the notion of having to live with the native peoples who have made such sacrifices to accomadate them.
I warn you now, if you continue along this path every one of us will suffer. "Slaying the goose that lays the golden egg ." comes to mind.
Apparently the British are world renowned as moaners and whingers . Always blaming things on "them and they". Expecting others to do things for us because its beneath us to stand and be counted, but quick to blame others for trying. Others have their heads up their arses and live a life of denial saying things like "I am alright", "Can't be arsked", "wont make any difference", "If it gets worse I'm off" and many more which I have heard.
Ignorance is no excuse, you are all aware of the dangers facing this country right now, I will not even try to educate you as to what the dangers are if you are so thick as to what is going on. I consider you to be part of the problem.
Now many of you would travel the length of this country to go to a football match, a gig, a music festival , a dog show, to save the planet, for the suffering in the world, for your pensions.
Would you inconvenience your self to save your country? To march peacefully, to make your objections known, to maintain your freedom?
There are some who are prepared and some who work bloody hard to make a stand and speak out, but there are way too many who expect us to do this on their behalf and do absolutely nothing.
We need to do this for ourselves and our children. What excuses will you make up?
There is nothing more important than our country and our children's future.

It's all nice having a rant but as far as I can see your all pissing into the wind,to change anything you have to be where the power is,to get to where the power is you have to infiltrate the said powers,so get your mates to join the Beeb,Liebour etc where the power is and climb the greasy pole and change things from inside otherwise wait until we the people can vote another politico in, you can rant all you want,OH and co can parade all they want, next year will come we will still have niceley written posts and nicely written comments and that lot will still be in power and we still get pissed on,if you want to change things change them from the inside.

Old Holborn said...

Well, if they have their way, we won't even be able to rant all we want.

East Germany was not overthrown from the inside. The USSR was not overthrown from the inside. The British Empire was not overthrown from the inside, nor Pol Pot, nor Hitler, nor South Africa.

All it takes is a few people who don't mind the fact they might not get a 42" Plasma, might miss an episode of Eastenders or might get funny looks from the Police.

The real problem is that there is a drastic shortage of those few people.

A most moving post I have to agree with the points that others have left.

The general answer to this post is simply 'I agree' and although our once great nation has fallen into disarray this is no time to sit and wallow about how bad it is and have a wank about moving to Switzerland.
I'll get to the point....

Now is the time to do something about it instead of sitting here doing fuck all we need to unite together and make a difference.

I'm fully aware of LPUK but democracy is not the way to go about it and I think OH was just scratching the surface of hell raising with his walk.

What we need to do is much higher profile publicity stunts to get people to ally to the cause.

I'm thinking anarchy meets fathers for justice and hey if we fuck up too much Switzerland looks like a good second best but lets try sort this place out first!
